It seems that there are more 3946052 ZL1 blocks popping up on ebay every day. From what I understood there were only 69 camaro's and 2 corvette,s and maybe 18 or so over the counter motors. And how do you tell if it is a over the counter motor from one that came in a car from a can am motor? I own one that doesnt have any dates or vin #'s on it, just a cast number. Mine came from Washington state and has a history of being in that state for at least 25-30 years or so.

Try posting your question over at Yenko.net. Some of those guys hang here, but you might have better luck, there.

With 69 ZL-1s being made, I would think they would have 10 or 15 motors in reserve for warrenty? The 1968 Yenkos motors that were coded MV had 9 motors for back-up. (A total 70 COPO 9737s made with 79 motors being built)

I recently visited a shop where a ZL1 block was being coded for a ZL1 resto. It is amazing how the casting date codes can be reapplied to a block along with other important codes/numbers. All you need is a block and it can be transformed into an exact duplicate of the original block that came in the car.

There was a lot of ZL1 blocks sold for racing, the McLaren CanAm cars had injected ZL1s in their cars.
I had one such block 25 years ago that had come to Sweden from England and McLaren. We was going to use it in our ProStock but we decided against it since we expected that it wouldn't hold up. So we sold it to a guy who was going to place it in his livingroom. Jan
