I've been thinking about getting an additional credit card to only use for extreme emergencies. I found quite a few decent offers, but I REALLY skeptical about filling out applications on-line. "especially when they want my social security number". Common sense tells me that this is a no-no and that the best way is to get their phone number and have them mail me an application, but just for the sake of curiosity, would you fill out one of these on-line applications and give your social security number?

Get one from your local credit union. That way if there is an issue, you can talk face-to-face with someone that is actaully in the U.S. and most likely english is their first language (or a very close second
) Good Luck. PS that means no I would not do an online app.

Garfield,
If you type ANY personal information over the internet and then somehow you end up with a spyware virus...All it would take is a port scan and they get enough off your computer to start up a "new, improved Garfield". One that likes to buy big screen t.v.'s and get cash advances, etc be VERY careful about what info you give to ANY company over the internet! Dano

If the company's site is secure (https) I wouldn't worry too much. Reputable banks have their act together these days. I applied online for a Bank of America card last year, was approved immediately, and had the card within 3 days. We trust the cashier at the local store or restaurant with our credit card info, and make purchases, pay bills, etc, online. There are a hundred ways to get personal info such as SS numbers these days, so I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about them all.
Just my 2 cents... Kevin |
