Have any of you used the repop power brake boosters? The booster on my Daily Driver 69 develped a leak. I called every parts place in town and only found 1 booster in stock at a Checker auto. I went to get it and it looked like it was dug up out of a swamp. The thing was pitted all over and spray painted a cast color. The thing looked awfull so I passed on it. I went home in disgust and looked on ebay and found a nice looking new cadium (sp) plated repop booster for 100.00 bucks shipped. I bought it and installed it today and it leaks like crazy down at the firewall. I was carefull with the rod as to not damage the hub. I emailed the seller to see if I can get it replaced but havent heard back yet. So... I guess my question is have any of you guys used these repop boosters with luck? or is this a comon problem with them? I was really looking forward to getting my car back on the road today, but Im back to square one.
Thanks in advance, Nick |

I know what you mean. I had to buy 3 boosters before I got a good one. They are damaged in shipping according to "The Right Stuff", a restoration parts company. The newest ones they ship out are packaged so as not to get damaged in shipping. The rod connects to the most fragile plastic material in the world and has to be handled very carefully. I would suggest having help when installing through the firewall. I would also check to make sure the replacement will hold a vacuum before installing.

That stinks. it took three to get a good one. I actually had help while guiding it through the fire wall just for that reason. Its funny... it doesnt seem to leak until you step on the break pedal then its so loud inside the car you can hear it over the Flowmasters. It is worse than my bad original booster. The car has already been parked because of this booster problem for about 2 weeks. This car is my daily driver i have driven it every day for the last year and half since I bought it and im having the Camaro withdrawls.LOL... I hope the seller I got from on ebay will replace it with out to much of a headache.

The first one I bought leaked constantly. The second one wouldn't leak if you pulled out on the rod. I use my stock Chevy truck to bench test. I connect a long piece of 3/8 hose to get the booster out from under the hood where I can check it out. Dont forget to put the master cylinder pushrod in before testing no matter how you test. It will leak from the front if you don't. After turning the engine off you should have vacuum in the booster. If you push in the rod you will get an assist the first time or two then it gets hard to push. I like to let it set a while then pull the check valve out of the front to see if it is still holding vacuum, if it is you will hear it if the check valve is good.

I may have to go that route as I still have not heard a word back from the seller.

69 Cama, I have a new repop power booster that I will be putting on when weather permits. Before I go through all this work, can the damage to the plastic part that you refer to be seen by lifting up of the rubber boot that the brake rod goes into?

The damage on the first one I installed could be seen down inside the rear dust cover. It had a big crack in it. The second one had no visable damage but wouldn't hold a vacuum unless you pulled out on the rod. Test it before you install it and get help when you do install it so you don't break it.

Well good news... I sent the bad booster back and the ebay seller sent me a replacement. I installed it today and it works perfect and looks great on the car.
