A quick thanks to everyone here (primarily Mark C)... for the knowledge on block stamps. A while back, in the Tag Team area Mark C made a picture comparison of two DZ stamps showing how they were the same. I paid attention and listened.
Recently (today actually) I was going to buy a fully redone (turned crank, mag'd, resized rods, new pistons, polished crank....etc, etc..) DZ block with the correct date that matches the POP I have (what a find right?). I asked the seller for the photo of the pad, and I made my own picture comparison. The seller claims the block was lightly decked and those are original numbers remaining.... By itself it doesn't look too bad, but WOW... there's a huge difference when you put them next to each other. The sizes are actually the same (one is just a larger picture) but the font is what is different, especially the "9". I feel that the one in the picture listed as "DZ Block for Sale" is restamped. That is the one I *WAS* going to buy.... This knowledge stopped me from spending (wasting)the $2400.00 on a restamped short block.... For anyone reading this who isn't a member here, or anyone who doesn't use the 'search' function and all the info here to the absolute maximum....listen up.... THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST CAMARO SITE AROUND!!!! Thanks Guys! |

Wow..I thought the one that is supposed to be orig looked like a restamp because it does not appear to be in a gang stamp.

It is in a gang stamp, it's just that the letters are just a tad bit taller in a Flint stamp. They all hang down below the bottom of the digits by about a line width. Sometimes of the year the letters fall below the digits, sometimes they are above. It's real hard to see without a clear picture of the stamp that you can blow up and different digits at the beginning or end of the number make it harder or easier to see.
I've never seen a 9 in that style on a flint block. There is a second style used mostly on CE blocks, but that aint it. |

Even without the wrong stamp characters, the rotary cutter marks are a dead giveaway that it's been machine-shop decked, then restamped.

It's a shame we can't tell all of us about such crap as this as well as where the hidden VIN stampings are on our old cars without people that do this stuff knowing what we know and learn from each other b/c I figure the SOB's do read what we post so they just try to work harder at creating "ringer/counterfit" parts and cars!!!!

Bill:
That 9 is a dead give away, but becareful when basing the stamping on the straigtness of the set. I've seen blocks (mostly big blocks) where it had an original stamp and a few fonts were slightly miss aligned, or in the same stamp the "O"s were two totally different styles. I base that information while removing an Impala engine (original) with miss aligned and different fonts. Broach marks were there, and who would change a stamping to match a rusted out Impala. Also seen a couple of small blocks where the number set was straight for the first few and then took a nose dive downward. Again this was a known to be original block (nothing special). |

...but what if an engine was decked years ago, by an honest machineshop and as a service restamped the block with its original numbers? This could have happend easily a longtime ago before anyone even thought about doing this in a "illegal" way...

I think both stampings look odd. I've never seen a stamping like the top one and the bottom one is definitely a restamp. It will really come down to the comfort factor when you look at a block. If you're not confident or comfortable with what you see, walk away. Honestly, I'd probably walk away from both of those.

What would you all say about this one
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW I mean, how can you tell a fake one from one that was machined and re-stamp, I take it from what most of you are saying is that there is in fact no way to tell? |
