I have read many post on this this site regarding fuel gauge issues and attempted to get informed before posting this. I am new to electrical issues, so bear with me.
1- Tank shows almost empty. I disconnected the tan wire in the trunk and put the ohm meter red on the disconnected tan wire connector. I tried various contact points for the black ohm connection including the ground coming from under the trunk lock that connected to the right side of the trunk mount ( i gave this connection point a good cleaning) . I got two consistent ohm readings of 19 and 11. I am not sure why this fluctuated so much. Am i reading other post correctly that there is another ground coming from the sending unit? I went and filled up the tank and it only took 11.4 gallons. So, i assume i had about 7 gallons in the tank that showed empty. This brought the fuel gauge to a just under full reading. When i got home, i connected the ohm meter in the same fashion and got a 83 reading. Only about 3 miles home, so there was not much usage. I see from other post is should read 0 to 90 from empty to full. When i disconnect the tan connector and turn the key to the on position, the fuel gauge goes to a 3 oclock position. So, finally my questions, do i need to drop tank to test anything else? Where are the other connection points i should test and or pull off to test. I am not even sure i am using the ohm meter correctly, but i am trying. Note, i just had the tank replaced and the sending unit. Would the tank need to be dropped, and the sending unit pulled out to adjust the arms? Thanks for any additional comments on this issue. Thanks. |

The tank has a capacity of 15 gallons. So, at empty, there is suppose to be 3 gallons left.
Since the gauge seems to be working somewhat, I'd get used to its readings and make it a point to fill it when 1/4 tank. You're not going to get it exact, I don't think, just my opinion.

one other thing you could do is to ground the tan wire in the trunk, if the gauge goes to empty, then everything is working correctly from that connection forward to the gauge
but from the sound of it the gauge it reading correctly and because your gauge is working and is just off a bit, it looks like if you want the gauge to read perfectly correct, you will need to drop the tank and adjust the sender |

I am not sure i understand the capacity answer. Is the tank 15 plus 3 =18 total gallons. 18 gallons total capacity is what i see in the manual.
Second, would i ground the tan wire with it connected to the harness or disconnected? After i ground it, would i test it by turning the key to the on position and then it should go to empty? Thanks. You guys are worth alot to someone like me. !! |

I believe your fuel gage will show "empty when u are down to 3 gallons, hence the addage I am on empty but i got at least 20 miles left in her!

ground the wire coming from the gauge (not the side with the sender) and turn the key on and if the gauge shows empty, everything from that point forward is fine, if not try another ground, or you have extra resistance

You can ground the tan wire with or without the trunk connector being disconnected, but it's easier with it disconnected.

OK.
Disconnected tan wire - Ignition on- Tank indicator goes to 3oclock. Tan Wire in trunk, disconnected, grounded to frame, ignition on, fuel indicator goes right to empty mark. Tan wire - with tank almost full indicates 83 ohms. Tank indicator just under full mark. I checked the ground for the fuel sending unit at the rear of the trunk and it was very clean, i recleaned it anyway. No changes. I grounded it directly to another part of the frame using a jumper and the tan wire still showed the 83 ohms. Can i now assume it is the arm that needs to be adjusted within the trunk? I will continue to test ohms as the fuel is used. Thanks. 68camrs. |

or you could live with it if dropping the tank is too much work (i dont think i would adjust it)
