Default Windshield Wipers Don't Stop in Down Position

I have a '68 camaro, and the windshield wipers do not stop in the down position. In addition, they are faster in the slow knob position than they are in the fast knob position. Would that be the switch or the motor?

Do they not go all the way down when running? Or do they just stop whereever they are at when you turn them off?

They go all the way down when they are running. In fact, I can make them stay all the way down, but my timing has to be really good! If I turn them off when they are half way up the windshield, they stay half way up the windshield. Any advice you have would be really appreciated.

clwilcox33, I think I misunderstood you. When the car is running, they do have the same problem. They still don't stop in the down position.

If the wipers do stop when you turn off the switch, then the switch is OK. If the wipers just won't continue moving to the bottom of the windshield after you turn off the switch, then it is the motor that is the problem. There is a set of "park contacts" inside the motor that continuously open and close when the motor is operating. When the wiper switch is turned off, the contacts are closed at that moment allowing the motor to operate until a cam inside opens the contacts, stopping the motor in the park position. Something inside is not allowing those contacts to close or there is a break in the park circuit.

Replacing the motor should fix your issue.

Edit: The motor replacement will probably also fix the issue with it being slow in fast and fast in slow, however, it is still possible your switch is bad as well, though unlikely.
