Question Drive Shaft length

I have a 1969 camaro with a 1972 350 and a m20 transmission from a 1967 camaro. I believe I have the original rear end - 10 bolt. This car was apart when I bought it. It is on the road now, 4 1/2 years later but I still have some issues to work out. This site has been a lot of help. Now the question: My drive shaft is too short. It measures 49 inches from center of ujoint to center of ujoint. But the trans yoke is 2 inches out of the trans. One drive shaft shop told me it should be 5/8 of an inch out, another told me it should be 1 an 1/8 inches out. Either way my driveshaft is too short. I want to buy a new drive shaft. Can someone give me advise on the correct size and a good place to purchase a new driveshaft?

Thanks Jim. 50 inches would put my yoke 1 inch out of the trans. Thats a lot better than what I currently have. Any idea of a good place for me to purchase a new driveshaft?

1" to 3/4 is plenty.

I had a local driveshaft shop re-tube mine. With new joints and balanced it was almost as much as I could buy new from Rick's. Plus side was I got the length I needed and if there was a problem I'd only have to take it back down the road a few miles instead of shipping it off.

The drive shaft in my Camaro came from the same 1975 Nova donor car that I pulled the 8.5” rear end from. It was longer than my original shaft. I had it shortened and balanced at a local shop.

The front yoke on the later model Nova shaft is almost ½” longer than my original ’67 Camaro yoke. Perhaps if you used one of the longer yokes on the front of your current drive shaft it would give you the extra length you need without reworking your shaft. I would check your local wrecking yards for one. I would imagine just about all mid to full size GM cars from the mid 70’s used this same yoke.

my advice is to pick your driveshaft shop / machine shop and they will tell you how they would like you to measure the length as it seems that each one has a little different way to do this ...at least in my experience

I just ordered a new driveshaft from Denny's Driveshaft. They have an excellent website that answers all your questions on measuring for a new shaft. When I called to order my shaft they were very helpfull and friendly. They make sure they get you the right driveshaft, yoke, and u-joints. Total with shipping for new heavy duty balanced shaft, yoke, u-joints, and hardware was $276. That includes lifetime labor warranty. Check out their site.

I want to thank all of you for your help. These are all good comments. I would love to use the local driveshaft shop but I live in a small town and we only have one shop setup to balance driveshafts (to the best of my knowledge). I know they do a good job on rear ends but I am not hearing the same about them on driveshafts. I guess I need to take a chance.
