I think by now there are more with orig engines. The blue RS ZL1 just got it's orig block back last year. White ZL1 that Reggie Jackson has got it's orig block also. I know where the orig engine is for the # 3 ZL1 and the # 26 ZL1 engine is in # 3 so at some point they will also get back together. The orig block for the second yellow ZL1 is also out there so someday it will also get back. # 6 has it's orig engine. #'s 18 and 30 also have orig engines. Those are just ones that I have been around. I'm sure there are others. I would value a ZL1 more by options than having the orig engine. To some cars the orig engine helps document the car but a ZL1 is confirmed by it's vin so it is not as important. If you are really looking to buy one I can probably help.

the offer for help from Charley will be your best bet since he has owned a few of them himself and knows most the current ZL1 owners

Charley,
I have a 052 block dated Feb of 69. The numbers on the pad are not factory. Is there any other way to tell if was originally in a car or over-the-counter?

If it was in a car the vin will be down by the oil filter.

No VIN number. Any idea how many 052 blocks were made?

According to Ed Cunneen's book, 283 assemblies, 279 bare blocks.
