Default 1969 cowl tag....please decode..

I have been helping a person with a 1969 Camaro and decoding the numbers. This car is just a rolling chassis, no engine or transmission, and I haven't actually seen the car physically. The numbers for the cowl tag were taken by him and emailed to me.

The public VIN is not the correct plate either. The plate seen through the windhshield is from a 1969 Chevy Impala. Someone has re-tagged this car. I am working in official capacity on this one and the owner knows it will have to have a new state issued ID number as soon as we get all the paper work through the court.

The cowl tag is this:
BODY BY FISHER
ST 69 12437 VN309189 BDY
TR 727 76 76 PNT
4A A437

If someone can make heads or tails of this please help. I dont' know if this is the correct numbers or not and if I have too I will go down and actually look at this myself. Thanks...

69 Camaro built in Los Angeles (van nuys) plant first week of April 69. It is a coupe with white standard interior and Daytona yellow paint. A437 code is just a batching number, no trim info is in the code. April Vin ranges are 124379L528xxx to 124379L530xxx. Hope that helps!

Did you check for the hidden VIN on pass side top of cowl??
You may find it there.

Built 1st week of April, Daytona Yellow with white interior is about all the tag says.

TerryN - 711 is black standard interior, what is all the info from your tag??

Terry, welcome to Team Camaro!

In 1969, the 711 next to the "TR" is the code for a Standard Black interior. So, no.

The X codes are a Norwood (NOR) only deal, starting sometime in mid December 1968 (12B and up, reportedly). X11 didn't necessarily mean SS either, it just meant a non-SS396, non-z28 with Style Trim. Could have been a 6, base V8, or SS350.

There's lots of other clues that can point to an original SS 350 car. Dual fuel lines, dual exhaust plate on driver side rear frame rail, the list goes on.

Have you checked out all the hard work of the Camaro Research Group ( www.camaros.org )?? Lots of good info.

If you want to post back the full cowl tag, first part of the VIN (at least up to the "N" or "L"), any motor numbers, anything you want checked out, we'll be glad to help. You probably should do your own post instead of piggybacking on another. Just easier to track that way...

Yes we did find the hidden number and it is the L plant. We were also able to build the full VIN to check for stolen, which it was not. I think the public VIN had been removed from this car at one time to be put on another.

Since the title for this car is for the improper VIN the owner is going to have to petition the court for ownership and then DOR will have to issue a state issued VIN and new title. The owner will have to pay for the all fees for this to get it taken care of.

Such a hassle for some's silly actions........
