I striped the firewall paint with paint striper. If you get the striper off fairly fast it usually does not act on the primer as fast.
The marks you see are actually the bare metal under the original caryon. From all I understand these marks were on the bare steel and were eventully blacked out. As disscussed here on previous posts. What is left is gray overspray and it is pretty tuff stuff. Although not correct, I will most likley reproduce these marks on top of the blackout.

I use a scotch brite pad/lacquer thinner combo, and the markings will slowly begin to appear. But usually the markings under the black will leave a bright impression on the metal, like shown in the pics above.
