My parents are going to be buying all of my paint supplies for my 68 this christmas, so far I've sanded the entire car down to BARE METAL with an air D/A, an electric D/A, some 80 grit sand paper, and a good friend from school. I then primed the car and am now building out home-made paint booth and borrowing a top of the line paint gun from a guy that my dad knows. I just got my new february issue of super chevy and there was a little 2 page article on 2 69 chevelles. One of them was blue and one was black. It says that the black one's paint was made by PPG I'm pretty sure and I've heard and read that PPG and Dupont are the best paints. I'm looking for a good deal but at the same time, I want a good paint. I would like to know your opinions on what kind of paint to buy urethane....? And also what kind of clear coat to buy? If possible could you include the prices on these paints and clear coats and also the price for one gallon of the PPG black that's on the chevelle in super chevy?
Thanks ALOT guys, Donnie P.S. The article is on page's either 29/30 or 28/29. |

I am in the same stage you are with my car. I am using PPG paint on mine. If you go with a Basecoat clear coat then you will spend $35 to $45 dollars a quart. Then you'll need hardender and reducer. approx $75( guessing). The clear is very exspensive and can cost around $200 a gallon. They also recommend using the same brand primers and sealers as the paint. I spent $325 just on epoxy primer, hi-build primer, catalyst, and paint for the firewall/dash. I would suggest going to a paint supplier in your area and talk to them about your project. They will spend the time to tell you about there products and your options. Dupont and PPg both carry a budget line of paints and primers. Nason and Omni respectively. They run about half the cost and can be used interchageably with the main line of products. Like PPG base/clear with omni primer/sealer.
I have used both Dupont and PPg and definitely prefer PPG. Most pro painters agree. The ppg products lay much smoother and are glossier. Good luck and don't rush it. Read as much as you can so you do it right. You might want to check out the book "how to paint your Hot Rod" by Boyd Coddington. check barnes and nobles. it has info on all types of products and gives good advice on bodywork. hope this helps ------------------ 68 camaro under restoration http://www.touringcamaro.com |
