Can anyone recommend a gear shop in the San Francisco Bay area? Preferably one that you have actually used and had a good experience with. I am finally thinking about biting the bullet and dropping down from 4:10 to 3:23. I have never had the differential cover off of the car, but I suspect I will find a 4 series carrier, is that going to present a problem or cost me a bunch of cash to replace it with a 3 series?

Scott, If memory serves me, there is a good place in Milpitas on main st. Take 237 into Milpitas, take the main st exit by the liquor barn and turn right onto main. It's about 1/4 mile down on the left. I had them rebuild an old 69 HO 327 for my jeep there. Was a complete machine shop last I recall.

Scott - check out Rearend Specialities, I've had them change a R&P, weld new spring perches and replace bearings. The only thing they did I didn't like is use gasket sealer instead of a gasket when they put the cover back on. I know others from CLNC have used them as well. Talk to Mike at 408 988-3619 they are by the SJ airport on DiGiulio...

I had good luck many years ago with "Pete's Gearshop" in Hayward on Foothill. Nice guy, Aussie I beleive. He knew his stuff.
Good luck.

Speed Merchant on Lincoln Ave. in San Jose might be able to help you out too...they're a speed shop with a full service garage attached.
I used to buy all my parts from them when I lived in San Jose.
