Default Loose steering colum

Hello this is my first post here! and im not quite sure if this is the right place for this thread but here goes. Im buying an '81 Camaro from a friend. Really the only major thing wrong with it is the steering colum. The steering wheel, and the part of the colum that has the ignition switch is very loose. The other part of the colum that goes under the dash is a tad bit loose also, but just very very little. He drove the car for about a year with the colum like it is. I, however would like to fix it. The machanic that was going to fix it passed away, but he told me its only about an hour worth of work and to pull the wheel and turn signal switch, and from there its blurry, i cant remember what he said. Has anyone had this problem? and do you know how it can be fixed? I can fix it, i just need to know what to do. Thanks in advance!! Rick-

Rick, Get the steering column fixed before you drive the car for safety reasons. What you should do is get a service manual for the car and look at the illustration of the steering column. The manual shows all the different parts and the order of assembly. I think in your case that the problem is somebody didn't attach the bowl assembly correctly to the column. You will have to take off the steering wheel and the turn signal switch to get to the lock ring for the column. Take your time and do it right. Good luck!
