Default 1996 camaro, will not start?

My son's 1996 camaro will not start when he puts the key in and he gets a security alarm light on the dash and it will not turn over. Does any body know what could be wrong? Thank's Pat

VATS. The built in security system can't (or isn't) reading the resistor in the ignition switch and won't allow the starter to engage, or the injectors to fire. Try cleaning the resistor (black pellet on the shaft of the key) with some WD 40 or something similar. Or try another key. If neither thing works then the wires from the ignition switch to the VATs unit may have broken off. That will rewuire a new ignition switch, or you will have to bypass the VATs connection to the ignition switch. Do a search on VATS and you will find the info you need.

Your car has the VATS security system. The cars computer reads the resistance value on the IGN key, with the correct resistance computer allows the car to start, with a incorrect resistance, it will not crank and the security light will come on. Your problem is either the key, the IGN lock or both. Dirt on the key or the contacts inside the lock change the resistance value causing your problem. You can try to clean the pellet on the key or have a new key made, and spray contact cleaner in the lock, or replace the lock. You can also bypass the VATS security system, go here
