I purchased a 1970 RS/Z28 in 1980. It's deteriorated allot as it set idle for the past 10 years. I would like to refurbish it, but would like to ensure its authenticity before investing any capital. It was positioned as a numbers matching car in 1980 when I bought it. I can find the correct block code of V0414CTC for the LT1 350 built on March 14th, but there does not appear to by a partial VIN number on the block pad (front of the passenger cylinder head) like I thought there should be. Is there any other place on the block where a partial VIN would be stamped that would verify if it's original? If it helps, the plate under the hood has the following info: ST70 12487NOR259292BDY TR 712 10 10 PNT (it is white) 04D Z28 19 (it does have black stripes). The VIN is 12487ON53096. Also, it appears that the front of the bell housing has the stamp 28 CM (there could be numbers/letters in-between, but I can only see the ends of the stamp). It has a turbo 400 tranny. How can I verify if the tranny is original?

Possibly in the rough cast near the oil filter...going up vertically.....Can be VERY hard to see sometimes....

Z28 on the tag is good news. The gas pedal should be mounted to the floor, using 2 studs. The front A-Frame bumpers should have a 1/4" aluminum block molded into it.

8k tach, rear bumper guards, 12 bolt (70 only) rear axle, rear sway bar, plus the already mentioned "truck" style gas pedal and the aluminum spacer blocks of the front lower control arm bump stops

your body tag already says it is a Z, the engine should be a 4 bolt with forged cranks , rods & pistons with a solid cam, alum high rise and DEEP GROOVE pulleys on ps, crank (8" dampener), alt & water pump

cornfed,Jim is right on with his description and his website.I have received alot of help from both this site for my 67 and the other site for my 70.Here are some photos of the rear sway bar,floor mounted gas pedal,and where the block #s are.The block #s are incredibly hard to find but look on L side of block near oil filter where engine bolts to transmission.There's a flat where the #s should be starting with 0 for 1970 N for Norwood plant and the six digit vin.As you can see on mine very difficult to make out you might have to sand lightly to get the years of crud off.Paul

Thanks for your help, and to those before you. Being new to the site, I didn't realize the specialization on the 1st gen. camaros. Nastyz28.com is very helpful, as were your pictures. Everything matches on my car so far (including 12 bolt rearend, floor-mounted gas pedal, etc), which makes sense, as I didn't think the seller would have a lot of incentive to fake the Z28 designation back in 1980 when I purchased it for $1,800. I will look again near the oil filter just for the final confirmation of the matching number. I appreciate it!
