Guys weve covered this a few times, but im still having problems trying to remove the rear window without breaking it, Ive used piano wire but it keeps breaking, ive sat it in the sun all day to try and soften the area and used a heat gun but to no avail. Ive tried to cut the rubber away but just can,t get under the windscreen..HELP im getting to the stage where im just gonna smash it, so I can repair the rust down on the top right quarter
Any help will be appreciated Simso Australia 80 RS |

I used a wire coat hanger and a broom handle. I cut the broom handle into two pieces that were about 18" long and drilled a hole through each. I then straightened out the coat hanger and passed one end through the old seal, under the glass. Once that was done, I fed the coat hanger through the hole in the section of broom handle-one handle on the outside and one on the inside of the car. Once the handle was over the hanger wire, I "rolled" the handle to wrap the wire around it a couple of turns. I then got a friend to help out by working the wire from the outside while I was working it from inside the car. I worked VERY SLOWLY and got the window out with no damage. Take your time and use extreme caution and this should work for you as well-good luck! Bret

The one big thing that you have going for you in the removal of tempered glass is it will take a bit more abuse than laminated.
If you have whats called a cold knife, that would work the best, other wise, try a carpet knife and sharp blades work the best. Is the stuff that your trying to cut hard or soft? ------------------ 67 Camaro SS Conv. 70 Challenger R/T Conv. |

If its pretty hard, then its going to take a tad bit more work than if it had been replaced.
A 'cold knife'has a handle than you pull on that is attached to another part that has a small blade attached to it that you hold on to so you can cut glass out of cars with. Any glass shop should carry them. If your just wanting the rear window cut out, ask them what it would cost you to cut it out(probably around the same price as the tool and then you would have the tool after the job is done). ------------------ 67 Camaro SS Conv. 70 Challenger R/T Conv. |

ragtopman is right, Get yourself a cold knife (or a 'long knife') to cut it out. Windshield wire is ok, so long as you use the braided kind. Being in Australia, I'm not sure if the local glass shops sell these type of things. I'd search the net for 'cold knife' to see if there is a supplier in your area.
When you do remove it, be sure to clean out all the old adhesive. Here is an excerpt from a prior post reagrding backglass installation. See posts from me (dadjad) and ragtopman: http://www.camaros.net/forum/Forum1/HTML/001949.html Good luck! Dan |
