Default HELP TH400 tailshaft question?..pics included

I have a TH400 like the one in the link that has a fixed yoke rather than a slip yoke. I got this transmission with a 454 as a package deal for my 69 camaro. I know that I need to change the tailshaft and output shaft in the trans but does that involve tearing down the whole trans? Or can this be coverted to a slip yoke with minor work? The trans has a lot of work done to it and I would definately like to adapt it with the least work. Can this be done easily or will it be more hassel and money then what its worth? Should I start looking for another trans.? Any ideas or help would be great. Thanks Jordan

You can use a special yoke for the truck output shaft, it is counterbored. Most driveshaft shops should know what you need.

Really? The truck has a 2 piece driveshaft. I will try to call a driveshaft shop this week.

It is a slip style yoke, instead of being mounted to the output shaft, it will slip on the output shaft splines but it must be counterbored to fit the threaded output shaft.

The Th400 output shafts used in trucks with a bolt on yoke have an o-ring and a raised portion just ahead of the splined portion, this will cause a regular passenge car yoke to bottom out on the raised ring portion.
The "conversion" yoke is counterbored to fit over this raised portion, and still have enough spline engagement and travel.

thanks man, sounds like you have dealt with this before. I appreciate your help, do you know where I can find one, or do you have a link to one so that I can see it and buy one? Also by using this yoke, will it still be just as good as using a passenger car TH400 or are there any drawbacks?? thanks man. Jordan

Denny's Driveshaft can hook you up, www.dennysdriveshaft.com.

I believe Tom's Differentials also carries them.

Most driveshaft shops should be able to get them.

No real drawback, they work fine.

I am doing a Th400 right now going into a Chevelle that is using this yoke.

T-400 & 4L80 For Use on THREADED OUTPUT 32 Spline

Slip yoke is specifically designed to be used on a T-400 & 4L80 with the Threaded Output shaft. This design will replace the truck style bolt on yoke with a car style slip yoke and allow for proper slip travel and bushing contact for best performance. A must for any threaded output shaft on T-400 & 4L80 transmissions. We designed this yoke to solve this problem over 25 years ago.

OK, so I can get a TH400 out of 4WD truck for $100. It has a really short tailshaft, and appears to have the bolt on yoke. Is it worth the hassle to get this cheap, or should I keep looking around for a "correct" TH400? Opinions?
