Been looking at a 69 Z28, and while verifying numbers I came across the carb #. The number is 3999263 list 6239. The reference material that I have says it is a factory carb for a 72 corvette LT1. Does anybody know what size this carb is (cfm) and will it be more appropriate to replace the carb with an orginal 302 replacement (OER) carb, maily for performance reasons?

You correct about the '72 Corvette LT-1 350's aplication, but it also applies to the '72 Z/28 350 Camaro's that had manual trannies.

The main metering jets for the '72 issue were
Primary - 68
Secondary - 73

I don't know, and couldn't find the CFM.

You guys are on the money. It's a 780 CFM remote choke carb for 1972 model year Z28/Corvette LT-1 applications. For a pure restoration you would need the 3959164 carb. From a performance standpoint there should be little difference in the carbs except for tuning. Both are 780 CFM.

A quick correction for the sake of authenticity: -The actual # of the 69 Z-28 Holley carb was 3923289 (4053 DZ).
The 3959164 carb(4346)I believe was used in some big block camaros including special 427s (C.O.P.Os etc.)

The carb is a 780, and the jets are just about right for the 302....Holley said the DZ carbs had 68's and 72's in them.
A little known fact....the DZ carb was first used on the '68 Z28, and also the 396/375 horse engines.

thanks guys for the info......looks like the carb on the 302 will work just fine until it needs to be trashed.

Question

Just picked up list-4053 DZ carb, #3923289, build date of 944. Would this be correct for a Camaro (68/69) 396/325, 396/350 engine? Build date is 944......??? Thanks.....KZ

KZ,
DZ carb was used on 302 and 396 /375 motors. 396 /325 and 350 horse motors used quadrajet carbs and had oval port heads. Chevy did make a cast iron Holley high rise for oval port heads. I believe they were cast only in 65. I used to have a couple and used one on my 396 /350 motor with oval ports, nice intake if you like to retain factory look and run a Holley on oval ports.

Question

So then it would not be correct for a 396, unless it was the 375 HP version? Also, is it a 780 cfm or 800 cfm? Everything I've read so far say's 780, but my reference book (The Definitive 69' Camaro Z/28-SS396 Fact Book) calls it a 800 cfm? I installed in on my oval port 396 yesterday, and it ran GREAT, even better than the 750 DP I had on it last summer! Thanks......KZ

Hey John,

Kel

Kel, I'll have to drive it for a little while and see how it performs. You know I don't care about matching #'s, so it's definitely a possibility. I'm still waiting to hear from Ben, I bet he's going to have a heart attack when he finds out he practically "gave" me that DZ carb! What a guy. I think he should change his name from "No E" to "No DZ".......

I like it, No DZ. I think that is what we should call him from now on!

The 3310 I have should give you the same performance as the 4053. It is vacuum secondaries just like the 4053.

Heck, I'll throw in a dual line feed and fuel pressure gage as well.

Sorry carra,

We kinda just stole this topic from you.

By the way John, a 4053 is a 780 cfm carb from all the books I have. I had several people tell me a 3310 is listed as a 750 but will give you the exact same air flow as the 4053.

heheh. Just can't leave you alone, can I?
