Default Authentication required

Hi again -

The wireless network is working great!

Except, when my niece tries to log onto her school's netmail account on the wireless computer she gets an "Authentication required" message and can go no further. On the hardwired computer upsatairs, she can get into it just fine.

Any ideas or solutions? Should I call Linksys again? Thanks!

This doesn't sound like a router/wireless card problem to me. Is the authentication required message a username/password request from the webmail site?

Could it be the number below the serial number on your router? On my 2 wire router that is my authentication number that my wireless card needs

Scott - On the computer where she can actually access her webmail, clicking the Webmail button takes you to a username/password screen. On the wireless computer, you get the "Authentication required" message, so I think you're onto something. Something in the browser, maybe? Thanks!

We are quickly going to exceed my potential to help here...
When you say 'netmail account' is she accessing the mail via the browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc) or is this via an email program (Outlook, Express, Thunderbird, etc)?
Also, does the error have a number associated with it?

Scott - Here is a link to the site where she logs on. If you click on "Netmail Web Access" in the upper left under Students you should be taken to a log-in screen. Since you don't have an account there, you'll hit "cancel" on the login screen and then you should get the "Authentication required" message - at least I do here at work. On that one computer at home, you don't get the login screen, just the "Authentication required" message. Thanks for your help!

Al,
I pretty much exhausted all my computer expertise in your wireless thread, so I'm kinda shooting in the dark here....I tried the link and it worked as you described (from you work address). I'm guessing this is a browser problem.
Some things I considered are:
Do you have a pop-up blocker installed that would kill the log-on from poping up?
Maybe you have a firewall setting that is stopping this address or activity?
Is your Internet Explorer the latest version?
Troubleshooting could be to download another browser and try it. Try the page with Firefox from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ (It's a better/safer browser than Internet Explorer anyways...)

Hopefully someone who knows what they are doing will chime in here!

Another option I saw on their website would be to set up an IMAP supported mail client and try using that.
Here's the link from the SOU page: http://www.sou.edu/studentcomputing/emailsetup/
They recommend Thunderbird (I use it also) and it can be downloaded here:
http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/

Just another option to try.

Scott - Thank you very much for your help. I'll try those things you suggested. The computer I'm having trouble with has Windows ME (surprised?) and it has the original version of Explorer.

Appreciate the time you've taken to help me out!!

Al, I think I see a clue!

Perhaps Windows has remembered that user ID incorrectly and is entering it automatically for you? And of course, entering it incorrectly.

On the computer where it works right, what message do you get if you enter an incorrect password? Same one?
Is there a button to "remember it"?

Now if only I knew how to make ME forget it, this might actually be helpful!

Thanks for the help, guys!

I emptied the cookies, but that didn't do the trick. So I downloaded and installed Firefox, and now she CAN access her e-mail through that.. YAY!

So I now have two web browsers on this computer - is that OK? I seem to recall you shouldn't delete explorer. They both seem to be operational - and she'll just use firefox for the e-mail program. Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks again for everyone's help.

No problem having them all, I have 3 like Sytar. Once you use Firefox, you'll like it better than IE explorer. Nothing beats "Tabbed Browsing."

For arguments sake try this.

In IE, click on Tools/Internet Options. Click on the Content tab and click the AutoComplete button and click on the Clear Passwords button. Close IE and try to login to Netmail.
