Default Original Metallic Lacquer Paint jobs

Does anyone know if GM sprayed a lacquer clearcoat over their metallic paint jopbs in the 60? It seems to me they should have, otherwise upon sanding and buffing the metallic might become mottled looking. If anyone knows, please chime in!

I dont believe they did.Back in high school a friend had a original paint metallic gold 67 chevelle and i remember compounding the crap out of it,and our rags were gold. I also remember waxing a neighbors all original 10k mile Metallic blue 63 Cadillac convertible.Again blue rags. And that was a caddy. So if they didnt clearcoat, i doubt Chevrolet did.
Also GM didnt buff their lacquer,it wasnt reqired like aftermarket lacquers, due to their spraying/drying procedures.

They may not have buffed them in the late 60's, but I have factory photos of early 60's GM cars being buffed.

I believe that buffing solid colors was common but when dealing with metallics that was another story. I have seen factory metallic paint that someone tried to sand and buff and they ruined the paint. When sandpaper hits the metallic specs in the paint it leave a discolored spot or streak. I could see the finger marks where they sanded and streaked it. It is kind of like what happens when you sand through clear into the basecoat on 2 stage paint.
