Default How quick is your 2nd gen Camaro?

Welp -- my best thus far as been 11.73 @ 115 on a worn set of BFG drag radials. Over 3700# race-ready, 413ci small block (.060"-over 400), Comp 306S solid FT cam, Vic Jr, Bow Tie Phase 6 heads, 3310 750 Holley, TH400 trans with 2800 stall, and 4.10 gear. More left in it, but broke a piston on the last run of the year in '04. Fresh 408ci motor installed in May this year, but have had issues throwing belts at the track on the 2 outings I had, in addition the carb and timing aren't dialed-in yet so still working on that. Have a new carb (Holley 830 annular) and new converter - B&M Nitrous Holeshot 3600 which I bought because of all the heavy duty features including the anti-ballooning plates front and rear, which is important for thrust bearing longevity in a 400.

So -- how quick is your car? Look forward to reading about others' 2nd gens at the track.

You'll go quicker with the 830 annular and you will love the throttle response. I sold my 70 but I went 11.90 @ 115mph 1.5x 60 fts on pump gas (91 octane) and street tires/ no nitrous. That was with 3.42 rear gears and a hyd. flat tappet cam. Dart Pro 1 heads, Victor jr. intake and the same 830 carb you just switched to. 385ci.

Wow -- that's impressive. What was the cam profile? Also, were your heads and intake ported? Concerning the 830 -- what jets were you running front and rear, and did you mill of the choke horn?

You're right I do like the 830. I *think* it's the list 9381 model iirc. The weird thing is, it had #86 jets front and rear stock, when I think it's supposed to have #78 jets front and rear. Maybe one of the Holley guys putting it together wasn't paying attention and put the wrong jets in.

I just ran out and looked at my old notes. My jetting was 76 primaries and 78 on the secondaries. Yes, the choke horn was removed. Cam was a Crower p/n 00245. 311/316 adv dur, .507/.524 lift, 112 LSA, 244/252 @ .050. My heades were bowl blended and smoothed out the exhaust port, I port matched the intake and heads.

About your jetting, I don't remember if my carb had a PV in the secondaries. If yours doesn't that could explain the larger jets (assuming mine did have a secondary PV). I sold that engine to a friend of mine and he put it in his Nova it still has the same carb and settings (I set it up for him). I could try to get him to pull the rear float bowl or see if he remembers if it has a secondary PV. He might not be willing to pull the float bowl, if he does that will probably lead to me working on his car.

Royce, thanks for the info. My 830 had 6.5 pv's front and back, 86 jets front and back, stock. I removed the rear pv and blocked it, jetting up 10 sizes to 96 which I think is too much. After about a 92 jet iirc the pv restriction has to be drilled to make use of a larger jet, but in any case I kind of thought it was weird to see such large jetting in stock form. I'm going to jet it way down, maybe go with 78 jets in the front (I replaced the 6.5 pv with a 4.5 pv because of idle vacuum with the big cam), and go with the stock 86 jets in the rear with the pv blocked. Or maybe I'll also block the front pv and re-install the stock 86 jets there as well. I'm thinking that maybe the Holley tech who built the carb mistakenly jetted mine like an HP830 (which comes with 86/86 jets) instead of the 9381.

That engine of yours worked pretty good -- what do you have in it now?

Altitude corrected high 12s with a moderate 361 SB on street radials.

In other words, a slug-like high 13 up here.

No problem, hope it helped. I sold the Camaro the last engine in it was a 8-71 blown 388. I still have the engine and trans which is in my current project (1961 Buick Skylark) not running yet. Shooting for 9's on pump gas.

Whoa! That must have been an awesome powerhouse on the street! Get many races with that 8-71 sticking outa the hood?

Royce -- did you manage to get it to the track and get some times with that 388" blower engine while you still had the Camaro?

Beating the stangs is always a good day.

Nothing wrong with that, especially running way up in the rare air of the Rockies.

I never took it back to the track with the blower. To be honest it would have been a watse of time, there is no way it would have hooked. Roots blowers make so much low end torque it rediculous. This is the reason I started building my new project. I want to be able to hook all this power. No, not many people wanted to play with the blown engine. It was a lot of run to drive on the street but, if I ever really got on it, it just smoked the tires. Still should have gone easy 10's with lack of traction but, who knows. If I had it to do over I would have taken to the track just to see.
