I have 283 cu in motor, condition unknown but all there(pan to carb) that came out of my convertible.
Front pad #'s are 9V190879 and block reads 3756519 with 1818687 heads. Tag team says it's a 1958-62 vintage. I'm going to sell it but not sure what it's worth. Your kind (or otherwise) advice and thoughts would be greatly appreciated

I looked back to find your post in Tag Team on this, but didn't see it.
Are you sure it's a 283? Does it have a thin or thick dampener on it? Wide pad where the numbers are stamped, or narrow? The reason I ask is that I don't think it would be common for a 59 283 to have a partial VIN stamp. Maybe a 59 Vette would have a partial VIN, but it would be an "S". "V" in the VIN is the plant code for Pontiac (GMC).

I imagine it would be worth a couple hundred bucks or more to a guy restoring an early Corvette if it is rebuildable and the casting numbers match when his car was built.
You will have better luck posting the numbers on a Corvette forum. Be sure to include the block casting date in your post.

Thanks for the responses. The #'s should be in the tag forum. The only reason I think it's a 283 is what I was told on the tag forum. I'll check those items you mentioned and repost the #'s. If it is out of a vette I'll post there too.

I did manage to find it (dang you had a lot of engine numbers up). I tired to check for casting numbers that were close, in case one of the digits was buggered, but I couldn't find anything.
What throws it all off is it having a partial VIN, and the format of the partial VIN. If it was a 59 motor, it probably shouldn't have a partial VIN. The partial VIN format is inconsistent with a 59 VIN. Maybe post some pics, or email to me at ekammerer@terranearpmc.com ?

The casting number is a 283 from the years you posted.
GMC built Bus and truck chassis in the Pon.t MI "V" plant during 59 and used GMC based engines, not car engines in their trucks anyway. You'll need to thoroughly review the numbers and post for me to come any closer than a late 50's early 60's 283 block.

Steve -
Got your picture. The casting number is clearly what you posted, and the balancer is skinny so it is clearly a 283. I guess just double check those numbers from the pad in front of the head and post them back.
