The car ran out of gas. I brought 3 gallons, put it in & now no start. It happened on the hwy so noise was a big factor in not being able to hear the fuel pump. Anything else I should be doing?

Starts with starting fluid. Anything I should do before tearing into the fuel pump?

If the car ran good before running out of fuel, then I'd electrically bypass or hot wire the fuel pump relay to work and prime the fuel lines and remove the air.

Once this is done, then only air left is in the individual injectors and this would take some time, 15-20 seconds of cranking, to purge the air out.

Like I said, only if the car ran good before. If pump was operated by low fuel, it may have been overheated. The fuel level cools the pump, no fuel, pump overheats.

You might luck out by turning on the ign switch multiple times to IGN and let the ECM run the pump multiple times for its 2-3 seconds of initial turn-on.

Check the fuse while you are at it. Once they die they are usually dead but its worth a shot.

I checked the fuse but can't seem to locate the relay. I want to check that before it goes to the shop. Any help where to look is greatly appreciated.

If its the 91, the relay is located next to the drvr hood hinge, the black box about half the size of a cigar tin.

By removing the relay from the socket, you can look at the wiring in the connector and see two large gauge wires. Make a male-to-male spade jumper and plug into the socket on these two heavy gauge wires, red in color. This will make the pump run continuously. Should hear a buzz at the tank if good pump and should have fuel at the Schrader valve in the fuel line/rail on top of the engine.

A Haynes manual for the car would do wonders for you. If the 97, I don't know about the relay location, might be in the same place. Haynes manual for the specific model will tell you.

Attach a fuel pressure gauge to the shrader valve on the fuel rail first.If you have no fuel pressure while cranking move to the rear.Disconnect the tank harness connector and fabricate a 1157 bulb with female connectors.The larger gauge grey and black wires are your pump wires.Make sure your test is inside the body connector.Key up and the bulb should light for 2 seconds.If it does,the pump went south.Do not use a test light for this test.A poor ground will illuminate a test light but not allow enough current flow to operate a pump motor.If the pump windings went open this is easily measured with a dvom with the tank harness disconnected.Your reading will be OL.
