I need some help and I figured I would come here since I have seen so many of you are really up on Camaros and know your stuff.
My Daughter has an 88 Camaro with a 305 auto. It was repainted by the previous owner which we don't know, we bought it at a car lot in 2003. It has the throttle body carb, louver hood, hardtop and has the Z28 in orange with Iroc Z under it on the dash near the passenger side door and on the sides of the car behind the front wheels it says Iroc. I had someone out to look at it last night and said it's not a real Iroc Z28. Now I could care less it's a nice car and we like all camaros but I want to be honest when telling the people who come out to look at it if it's a plain camaro or the Iroc Z28. Also it has rear drum brakes I believe not all around disc and I was told Iroc Z28 only came with all around disc. We didn't buy this car because it said Iroc or Z28 we bought it because she loved it the minute she saw it and it was a good car. Thanks for your help Maria |

Thanks, I'm no car expert but to me the car appears to be stock. The engine looks like any other stock V8. But people can change things like the fake SS cars you come across so I want to try and be sure and be honest.
Not sure if this makes a difference but the car also has 16" rims wider on the back then the front and they are the ones that come with the car from what I have seen around on other Iroc Z28 (the ones that are painted the same color as the car. Will the vin number tell me if it is real or not? Thanks Maria |

Thanks I will check with them. I looked at your car collection and they are great. I wouldn't sell any of them if I were you. I had a couple 68 & 69 Camaros and Firebirds and a 73 Chevelle SS to name a few and regret selling them everyday.
Thanks again for the information I appreciate it. Maria |

It may not help but go here and plug in the vin.

I put the vin in autocheck.com and it came back as Camaro base model Iroc
Z28 then I went on another site Iroc something and it said on the console sticker the RPO code would read Z28 for an Iroc for years 88 - 90 that's what it says in the first column at the bottom. I did have the full car fax but it doesn't say what type of Camaro but the engine and everything else matched up. I'll check with GM, I mean I don't want to sell a Plain Camaro as an Iroc or an Iroc that's really a plain Camaro. I mean either way the condition of the car and the way it runs is well worth $2000 I've checked and anything less in the Camaros and Firebirds are project cars or seem to be junk but I just want to try and find out so the buyer knows for sure what they're getting. I'll contact GM to and see what I can find out. I appreciate all the info so far and if anyone has anymore great. Thanks again. Maria |

Maria, here's a link to a website that explains the history of the IROC's
www.iroczone.com Go to the IROC-Z History/Spotter's Guide Section. There is alot of go info there.

I owned a 1988 5.7L IROC-Z. This car came equipped with rear disc from the factory. Most 305 (5.0L) IROC-Z's had rear drum brakes. All 350's had rear disc. That's how I could tell back in the day; who had what under the hood when they wanted to race.
There should be a sticker either on the center console lid, glove box door or on the trunk hatch indicating the engine code. Good Luck!!

I love camaro's and irocs. I know ALOT about these cars. In 1988 The Z28 was replaced with the iroc. The sport coupe was the base camaro. You could get a 305 Throttle body and the rear drums. The only thing that is throwing me off are the door stickers that say IROC Z. In 88 Them stickers moved from the front of the door to the rear of the door. Other than that it sounds like an iroc to me

Look inside the console lid, if it is readable and says z28, then that is what it is. All of my Iroc-z's(87 thru 90) had the IROC-Z at the front of the door. Now, Is the rear axle sway bar 5/8 or 1"? How about the front? Is it a posi? ALL IROC's came from the factory with 16" wheels. There are ALOT of similarities between base coupes and iroc-z's. If you would like I can check the vin in my books and tell you what the car was when it left the factory.

What harley states is correct for his 90, In 88 though the door emblem moved to the back. The 16" Wheels were an option on IROCs, the G80 Posi was also an option, TBI was standard, TPI was an option, and more facts at http://www.camarosource.ca/php/camar....php?year=1988.
If your RPO tag in your center console has Z28 and the VIN in the upper left matches your cars, then you have IROC/Z. The Z28 was no longer an option - it was either a IROC-Z, a RS, or base. However, it will still list Z28 as the RPO code. If it's 305 TPI (LB9), then it should also have the 145MPH speedo. Odd, but it was not standard on the 350 - it was option B2L on all other non LB9 models. Standard was a 115MPH. -Dan
