Hi all,
So I'm at the stage in my 383 build up, putting the heads on. Quick question. As I read the manual on how to build a chevy small block. It states that put the heads on the correct side of the block. How can I tell which is which. One head has a stamp of 10 and the other is 9. I think that 10 goes on the even side and 9 goes on the odd side. But I wanted to double check with you experts. This is my frist complete engine rebuild. Thanks for the help. any tips on installing would be nice too. |

Unless they have been machined or modified specifically for the odd or even side you can use either head on either side.

All you have to match is the intake ports to the lifter valley side and exhaust to the headers
Your worry will be setting the heads down without disturbing the head gasket the first time (never a problem with head studs), if using cast iron heads. Don't want them wandering around looking for the two locator pins on each end of the block. Good luck and take pride in your accomplishments. Larger Dave |

Most if not all new heads are drilled and tapped at both ends so it wouldn't matter. Old heads (some) were a different story.

when you say the accessory bolt hole on the right side you mean the little hump on the oil pan side right?

Means the three 3/8's holes drilled on the end of head , to attach any accessories like alt , ac comp backets, etc. Usually they are on either end. Usually, depending on head manufacture.
