Question

Okay, I know from reading past messages that water runs from the cowl down to and through the rocker panels and out the square hole at the rear.

My question is, what is supposed to cover the oval cut out into the interior? I took off this taped up cardboard as you can see in the following picture. I don't think this is what's supposed to be there.

I stuck the camera in the hole and took a picture of the opening going into the rocker panel. Looks like I'll have to clean out the inside of the rocker panels somehow.

Dave On my 67 its called kick panel. When I replace mine I used dum dum around were the vent is to seal it.There is also a peice of insulation that fits around it too.You can vaculum out the leaves and make sure the drain hole is open in the bottom.

Dave, that duct tape should NOT be there. That hole should be open and the kick panel fits THROUGH that hole. What did the kick panel look like, if there was one?
The drivers side should be the same. Open. Was that one covered up also?

You can stick a vacuum hose in there and suck it all out. There's not really much you can do to clean out the rocker though. Unless you enlarge the hole back by the rear tire, stick a vacuum hose all the way to the front and clean it out. Then weld up the enlarged hole you made.
Are you replacing the outer wheel houses in back? The rocker should be open when you have them out.
Someone may have a better solution.

Ahh... my kick panel just has the hole cut out and no insulation. When I get new kick panels (someday) I'll seal around the vent hole.

Thanks,
-Dave

Currently I'm not planning on replacing the outer wheel housing. The drivers side kick panel was the same as the passenger side. But I am now going to replace the inner rocker panel on the drivers side due to rust so I will clean out that side then.

I'm finding that as I cut out the floor there's more areas that need attention too. So now I'm also planning on replacing the drivers side toe board and inner rocker panel.

Maybe someone put stereo speakers in those vent holes at one time, and then someone else took the speakers out and covered them up. That's what it sounds like.

The back side of the kick panels should have that jute type padding on the backs, and then the part that sticks out and fits through the kick panel opening gets sealed with dum-dum.

I am in the process of replacing the lower cowl due to the car sitting in a field and mice taking up residence in the lower cowl, their nest looked just like the leaves and crap in your picture but mixed in with a healthy dose of mouse crap. My lower cowl was rotted halfway up so wanting to do it right I am replacing the piece.
