Question 69 Z28 Exhaust System Questions???

Hello!

Sorry to beat a dead horse on exhaust systems. I did a seach, but did not come up with the answers I am looking for.

Ok, looking for a "factory looking" exhaust for my 69 Z28 from the hearders back that "sounds really aggressive". I do not mind if the system is 2.5 inches as long as it appears to be factory looking. (yes I understand the factory system was 2.25) The headers that are on the car are from the late 60's or early 70's. They are staying on the car.
So, the exhaust must have either chrome tips or polished stainless to match or come close to what they put on the late 69 Z's which was chrome. I will be having a exhaust shop do the work. So it does not have to be a direct bolt on.

Called Gardner, he does not have a system that will work with headers. I went round and round with him on this. Final conclusion, will not work.

Called Flowmaster, they do have a few systems for these cars. But I can not tell by the pictures if the tailpipes look like 69. Could be a option...

Called Stainless Works, they have a system that just came out that sort of fits my description. But he said it was a little quiet... Gees!
Said he would e-mail me some pics.

Magnaflow has a few systems as well. They look super nice. I have actually heard this system on a 69 Z. Sounded a tad quiet at idlle in my opinion. But still might be an option.

Chambered systems, sorry but I am not too crazy about those.....

Has anyone gone through this? Not sure why someone does not make a factory looking exhaust with a nasty sound. Not open headers loud but pretty aggressive. I like these old cars with a nice sounding idle.

Oh, one last question. Are you guys going with the one transverse muffler or the dual mufflers? According to Gardner the late 69 Z's had both the transverse and the dual mufflers. Some of the systems have either or...
I am just having no luck finding this....Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the help!!!

WAC, that was my greatest fear too, in the '60's. So I went with an L78 car but bought an L88 for it in 1968 just to hedge my bet. These are stock sized pipes. Conversations next to the running car are not possible.

Here they are installed. I wanted them to look like originals so I had them chromed.

I used a Stainless works chambered system. The fit was mediocre. I just removed it and ordered a factory style 2 1/4" system. The %^$##?++ tailpipes are wrong. The guy (big name person) can't seem to get the right ones. The new system has the crossflow muffler made by Imco. I heard a sound clip of that system and that is why I ordered it. I can email it if you want. I talked to D&R Classics. They have the same system I bought. Our sponsor SS396 has a system made by Pypes. Call them.

The early dual exhaust was chambered. Then the replacement dual was transverse muffler. Then later resonators were added to the transverse system.

WAC, you know that's the old stuff, right? Did you see the new pipes on the adjoining thread? No? Here;

I have the Flowmaster American Thunder Series with the dual mufllers, with the SS exhaust tips on my 69Z. The sound is excellent, and the fit was right on the money.

Rob,

Do you have pictures of your system "on the car"? I am interested to see how the tips look. Is yours pretty loud?
Do you have headers?

Thanks,

Thanks,
WAC, I'll get you pics tonight. Loud? I guess that's all subjective but I don't think it's overly loud at idle. Jumping on it is a different thing. Yes, I have headers.

WAC, You may have asked me or I may have sent to you as I have sent pictures of my Flowmaster 17104k with transverse. Let me know if you need them, send me a pm with your email address.

My car, 12A, came with deep tone exhaust as Gardner explained, only one transverse. When all finally rotted off, I went to the flowmaster kit with their transverse. Pipes are 2.5 and come out of the flange to hook up to Thorleys, go thru their H pipe and then thru two 3" x 12 flowthru bullets glass packs. Out in factory appearance straight back with angle tips, unpolished or chrome. I put the flowthru bullets as the flowmaster transverse is a little loud (and I am half deaf). The sound now is much more of what I recall a super stock , stock sound, little more raspy than the new mustangs. They are quiet enuff that I can hear radio and talk on cell phone 70 mph at 2250. Let me know.

Anyone have these tips? This guy tells me they look exactly like they did in 69 but these are polished stainless vs. chrome...

I'm having camera problems so I can't post pics. I installed myself and made sure everything was line up before I tightened the clamps. I'm extremely happy with the fit and finish and sound of the Flowmaster system.

I'm considering the PYPES 2 1/2" 304 stainless Mandrel bent Transverse Muffler, X-Pipe system on my 69 Camaro big block COPO "recreation" I also would use the accessory Polished Stainless Tips to try and replicate a stock appearance......
Does anybody reading have first hand knowledge of sound or appearance????
FYI, My low performance Big Block is running Hooker Comp Headers!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your time,
