mkv to avi = evil

well, for all of you that dont know .mkv is matrakosa format of both audio and video, anyways, i have a .mkv file and tried converting it to .avi. the file was 700 something odd megs, and when i converted it to avi, it became 17.6 gigs. *sigh*, wel i deleted it, any of you guys encountered this problem.
