Default Help. Computer security!

Norton security on my computer is telling me there is a rapidly growing threat and i tried to update and it's telling me to use live update. Did that and says not able to protect. What is wrong if anything and what can i do if there is a problem? First time this has happened! Please help. Thanks.. Doug

I don't know what problems jr68 has had but Norton works fine on Dells... I have supported hundreds of Dells with Nav and Sav on them.

If you have a trojan or spyware it may not help to upgrade your definitions. You need to follow what Norton says to do to eliminate the threat. Chances are it's cookies that grab personal information you are being warned about.

As far as updating, verify your subscription has not expired. If you need more help please provide your OS and service pack info as well as what version of Norton and what it reports.

Care to elaborate, because at work we literally have 1,00os of Dell computers (desktops & laptops) and we use Norton with excellent results.

We have all Dell in the family, PC and laptops, never an issue with Norton here either. Spyware might be affecting you as Dennis mentioned.

Norton is saying it is an outbreak alert and my computer is not covered. Does that make more sense? Thanks again... Doug

This is straight from Norton (Symantec)...

Quote:
Norton Internet Security 2005 also includes a new Outbreak Alert feature that will provide users with the added benefit of receiving automatic notification when a high-level threat outbreak occurs. Outbreak Alert analyzes the security posture of the user's PC and offers immediate recommendations for tightening protection if necessary
So from that, it's just telling you you have outdated security or virus protection. It could even be looking at security patches you should be getting from Microsoft. It could be your firewall isn't secure or turned on. Is your computer set to tell you when patches are available?

Windows firewall was off. I don't know how that happened Anyway, i turned it on and ran the liveupdate and here is what came up...

Outbreak alert cannot protect your computer from rapidly spreading threats at this time.

Please run Liveupdate by double clicking the desktop icon and then click on liveupdate. Well thats what i just did, i am confused. Doug

Reboot in safe mode w/networking. Have your antivirus run a scan, see what it finds. If it finds a virus - good - you can work on fixing it. Running is safe mode should, if you have a virus, keep it from getting in your way. Run the scan, then run your updates (thats why you need safemode with networking) then re-run your scan.

Reboot normal and see what you get.

Well I was on another forum and was discussing some problems I was having with my Dells and was told that the Dell pc's don't run well on Norton. I don't know this for a fact but uninstalled it anyway and installed Avast , it is free and has been running great for me with no problems for about a year now.

Dennis would know way more about Doug's bugs than I would , this is just something that worked for me.

Hey, this is Tracey. Doug hates computers...lol, so I did as arbarrett suggested last night and even though I didn't find any spyware or viruses, it has fixed the problem. Our computer is now protected. Thank you arbarrett for the suggestion and thanks everyone for all the help.

Frank, we did set to update weekly. We noticed that you could do that when we were trying to fix it. Man, we not only have the coolest car website on this earth, we can even fix each others computers. Thanks again. Doug
