Is it ok to use a spacer (alum as used with flex fans) between the water pump and a fan/fan clutch to allow for proper position within the fan shroud? Also I believe ideal is fan half in half out of the shroud, is this correct?

Thanks,

Yep,

I have about a 1 inch spacer now but even with that my fan is MOSTLY outside the shroud. It should be more inbound to the radiator. I have seen them as far in as completely covered by the shroud to completely uncovered by the shroud. I understand that halfway in and halfway out is correct as you suggest.

Watch those hands (OUCH!!!).

Thanks sr71bb,

I went ahead and installed the new fan and clutch with the spacer (finger count 8 ...plus the thumbs) from the flex fan. It is all the way in the shroud so I may want to find a half inch shorter spacer... we'll just see how it goes!

Ideally you want to have the fan just covered by the shroud. Otherwise you are defeating the purpose of the shroud. The idea behind the shroud is to allow the fan to pull air from the entire radiator. The back edge of the fan blades should be just inside the lip of the shroud when you are looking down at the top of the shroud. You don't want to have the fan closer in than that either. Since there are so many different combinations of fans and shrouds out there it sometimes makes it hard to allways get it right.
