I would vote yes for spark plugs. They'll make all the difference!

Seriously depending on the year my Mitchell Manual calls for AC R44's for 69 and up.

Hope this helps,

John

ohhhh the docode for the AC R44 it..R=Resistior 4=14mm plug taperd seat 4+temp range 4, if you need a long plug(as in you have 64cc head's) you need the LT on the on the end it will look like this
R44LT
short plug is
R44
hope this help's i would stay in the 4 to 6 heat range and the gap for HEI is .45 and the gap for point's is .35 unless you have a sooped up point set up then i would go with .45, and if you have a sooped up HEI you might try a gap of .60. have fun!

Thanks guys. My car has been backfiring so I thought I'd change out the plugs first.

I have 186 heads with 64cc chambers that have been rebuilt but not run yet. I put R44 plugs in it, but from this thread I'm gathering I should have used R44LT plugs. Would that be correct?

you got it dude..you see the plug is too short, trustme..i have 64cc vortec head's...the only dif between mine and the one's you have is the combustion chamber shap, i have a kidney shape you have a D shap if i recall. if you realy want to find out do this...take a small piece of wire and put it in the plug hole...with a flashlight count the thred's or mark the wire with the end in the head resting on the last thread, and at the edfe og the plug hole at the point where the taper seat end's. now check that agenst you plug, mesure from the face of the plug where the thred's end to the top of the sealing cone...it should be the same as the distance on the wire from the end to where you marked it, now R44 will work..but you will not get good performance out of them. good luck and post what you find! so other's can learn.
