I have a chance to buy an aluminum intake and a Quadrajet 4bbl for $100 bucks. I have the carb and am trying to ID it. The body casting says Quadrajet by Carter for GMC. I have found several stamped and cast numbers as follows:

On the base near a bolt hole is stamped 61165.
Oposite bolthole is cast 126.
In a cast circle is 7041002.
Another location in the body was stamped
17058213
1223(or 8) BJ8

I searched some other sites, but they only listed Rochester Quadrajets. No Carter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am actually looking for a manual on this carb.

Thumbs down

H-dog,

Its been posted that the Carter Q-Jet is a poor substitute for a real Rochester Q-Jet because GM got cheap and let Carter get in the business of making them knowing full well they couldn't make any money on them. Seems Carter made them outa substandard stuff and GM 's bean counters missed the material switch... Go figure. pdq67

My 69 Camaro had it's orig Carter made Quadrajet on it for 25+ years, other than a few rebuilds, it ran just fine. Maybe I just was one of the lucky ones. I went back through the archives to see posts/topics about them being substandard?? Well, it was info from I-man that seemed to convince that they are. I guess I dont know what to think now.

IMHO,

Iman might have his quirks and stuff concerning ZL-1's, BUT I gotta feeling he knows a whole bunch of Sh-t if you look past that.
Sorry for all the consternation about it tooo because I like to read the B.S. I might learn something from someone that looks at something or has done something different.

Like I said, IMHO. And as always, I ate tooo much turkey, Ha, Ha!!! pdq67

PS., BTW if your Carter Q-Jet works fine, great, but I don't think that I would buy one when there are sooo many Rochester Q-Jets out there, like millions of 'em. Unless you want "numbers matching", etc..

The best I can do is at www.wood-production.com/~padgett/roch.htm

My guess is probably a 1975 chevrolet carb.

I have never seen a Carter Q Jet work good, find a Rochester. BTW I agree with PDQ in all points.
