I'm getting ready for a drive train in my 69. and I need help deciding on motor and tranny. I was thinking about a bone yard L31 out of 97 or later Sub or Tahoe. I could probably get one for around $1300. It comes with the famed Vortec heads but is the bottom end strong enough? Any recommended cams to make it a 400 hp motor, CC Xtreme 262 maybe without coil bind. Is this essentially the 330 HP crate motor? Is the ZZ4 worth the extra money? Will the late model motors work in the 69 as far as motor mounts, clutch linkage ball and flywheel? Im thinking about staying with my 4.10 12 bolt and adding an overdrive tranny. I know Fortes offers a few. Any recommendations for this combo? Im looking to build a low 13 second street cruiser at a reasonable cost. Thanks in advance.

Check out this months issue of Chevy high performance. They did a motor with vortec heads and made 390hp on 87 octane. I'm getting ready to swap a 330 hp crate motor into my 69. If I had the money I'd go for the fast burn motor. Also I did some checking and these guys that have done some similar tests confirmed what I thought. I can go with a Comp cams 262 xtreme and stay under the .475 and avoid coil bind. I'm not going to buzz the motor past 5600

There is a difference between a fast burn ZZ4 and a ZZ4. About $520, a distributor, flex plate and dip stick. The fast burn has 30 more Hp and 15 ftlbs less torque! I figure torque is what gets there faster and Hp is what you brag about. The 330 Hp crate has 380 ftlbs of torque.
