I have a 1989 iroc 5.0 tpi and want to switch the engine for a 400 bored .040 over with high performance pistons, aside from the heads which must be changed, what cam is recommended? Do you think this change is worth the effort?

I don't think the TPI from a 305 is capable of flowing air enough for a 400. From what I have read is that the 350 TPI units are larger, not sure. But it is worth checking into before making a swap.

You probably don't want the 400. They have a tendancy to run hot in between the cylinder bores. a 383 is probably your best bet. For your intake, you can get better runners, throttle body and injectors. Also, you can get a programmable ECM that you can access and tune with a laptop. A buddy of mine has gone through all of this with a 88 GTA. There is another regular on this board who has a shop in Waldorf Md. and he probably the one to really listen too. I have a 1989 IROC as well,with a 383 in my basement, still needing a few parts! But one thing is the intake pattern changed in 1987 the two center are at 72 deg. This can be fixed by drilling I thought it would look strange so I got the heads. Have the base extrude honed, and buy a good set of runners. The upper plenum can be ported right beind the throttle body. If you look you will notice two 1/4 inch castings on the opening that can be removed. You can also free up air by removing the screens in the MAF, and removing the baffles from the bottom of the airbox. Holley makes an in tank fuel pump for the TPI cars that would work well.
