Question

Friend gave me an aluminum powerglide tonight (I had to haul away) - only problem is case has a chunk broken off - a chunk around the bolt hole (2nd on drivers side) is broken off -

He still had the chunk....the bolt hole is intact - chunk is 3.5" x 4"

My question is - can this be welded back somehow? will it be strong enough to use again? or did I just move it from his junk pile to mine?

the trans housing is Aluminum, you CAN weld it, but there so cheap just go get a rebuilt one and use the cracked one as the core,

i agree, i wouldnt trust a welded bellhousing. if the core is good it would be fairly inexpensive to have a transmission shop install the parts into a good case.

There's nothing wrong with a welded trans housing, aluminum or cast other than the fact it is ugly. If you have the piece, and it is fairly large,(not something in a million pieces) find a shop that does aluminum welding. It will be just as strong, if not stronger than before. I've seen them run in street/strip cars and I personally run stock 3 speed saginaws in my stock car with welded ears. Once welded, I've never had them break at the weld. You just have to find a good shop with a qualified welder to do the job.

Depending on what you are doing, you can always put a Ultra-bell on it from JW Transmissions. It will hold high HP. Racing trans shops wil always take PG cases, broke bellhousings or not.

My '64 Impala been runnin since 1988 with the same portion welded. It snapped when I had a friend helping me install the engine and tranny into the car. He started to tighten the attaching bolts without taking each up a little at a time. Cost about $25 for the weld. Guy came right to the shop and did it. Buy time he was done it was barely noticeable. Its done alot.
