Could someone please help settle this little friendly dispute...

My 16-yr old son is totally convinced that one can "not" tell the difference between a 67, 68 and 69 1st Gen Camaro just by looking the overall contour of the body. He says the only way to tell the difference between them is to look for the obvious differences in the tail lights, side grates(?) or other cosmetic differences.

I can't put my finger on it but, I disagree with his need to look for these
distinct feature differences, especially since there are plenty out there that have been modified. I believe I can tell "just by looking at it"... I'm fairly accurate at just looking at the over-all shape of the body determining whether it is a 67, 68 or 69. So, am I just lucky or... if you set
them side by side, are there slight differneces in their overall dimensions or
body-contour for each 1st-Gen Camaro?

There are no body differences between the the 67 and 68, but it is still relatively easy to tell what year it is by any view of the car, the tail lights are different, the vent windows on the 67, and the rectangular front turn signals on the 68. Also different are the badges, the SS hoods, and the fact that 67 drivers are just all around cooler people to be around (just kidding!). The 69, to me at least, looks totally different, there are stronger lines on the body which make the fender lip not totally round, the grill is deeper, and from the back it looks wider and shorter.

Go to the Team Camaro Home Page and click on Cars and Parts under Camaro Ads. You can the click on the specific year car you want to look at. At the Ad Page click on a post with a camera in it. That means there is a picture of the car in the post.

Just check the fender wells to tell the difference between a 67/68 and a 69. The 67/68's have rounded fender wells while the 69's are more squared. Side marker lights on a 68 while the 67 does not. This among many other differences.

The issue is not the camaro, it'a the son. When our kids get to that age we seem to get real stupid. Give him 5 or 10 years and all of a sudden your will be smart again. LOL Seriously, enjoy the debate, it won't be long until he is out on his own.

The difference is the 67 did not have marker lights and the 68 did. Also the 67 parking lamps were round and the 68 were rectangular. The 69 has a totally different body style so if you cant tell the difference between a 69,68,67 then go buy a ford they require less thought LOL

The guys are all right, but the quickest, most at-a-glance difference between 67's and -8's is the vent window - you can see it from a mile away (almost, anyway). I think most of them mentioned it above - but it's the one clear, quick, obvious-to-a-neophyte difference. And the lines of the '69 are similar, yet completely different. The '69's look fatter, or more muscular, than the leaner 67's and -8's. The fenders bulge more, their generally a little bigger looking, and the grilles are set deeper - also obvious at a glance, without knowing the minutia of year by year differences.

If you've got a '69, as your moniker suggests, your kid ought to be familiar enough with them to see the differences from a mile away - at least '69 vs. pre-69.

Sounds like a 16 year old to me.

also check the front bumper. the 69 is kind of "molded in", unlike the 67 and 68 bumpers which stick out.

I always look for the quarter panel louvers to tell if it's a 69 vs 68 at first glance.

I always look at side marker lights, 67 none,
68 larger rectangle, 69 small rectangle light.
