The factory tack has very slow response time. Is this common. Any suggestions?

I experience the same problem with mine. I do not know if all the 69 Tachs are the same but you are correct in that the response to actual engine rpm is lagging.
My next step is to buy an autometer to match my electronic speedometer. Kind of looks funny with a late model speedo and then an old tach beside it..

I have a repro 69 tach in my car. It runs about 500 RPMs behind actual engine RPM. After spending $225 for the tach, I wasn't too happy.

I think you have 2 choices: get an aftermarket tach or get a shift light.
