Question

Just buaght a '70 camaro SS recently. New to the classic car scene. Was told it has a 350. But apparently there were 2 types of 350's. How can I find out which type I have? Where on the motor is the # i should look for to identify it and where can I reference this number to get more info. Also would like to find out about the carb, other then being a 4 barel and made by Holley, how can I get more specs on it? Was told that the 70 camaro 350 only came with one type of carb to begin with. Oh one last thing, Ive seen posted on some sites that the 70 camaro came with an LT1 motor, how can I tell if thats what I got?

Thanks for any help you can offer. As this is my first resto project I am looking forward to getting started.

The engine I.D. code and date are located on the passenger side, in front of the head on a pad. The casting number can be found at the rear of the engine on top in front of the tranny. Find the numbers and post them on the Tag Team part of this site. Someone will tell you what you have. Also would be a good idea to post your trim tag numbers found on the firewall next to the master cylinder. Happy hunting!!

A 1970 SS 350 Camaro would have come with an L48, this engine is rated at 300 gross horsepower, is equiped with a cast iron intake and a Rochester 4bbl carb. The only 350 equiped from the factory with a Holley would have been on the LT1 which only came in Z28's. You can quickly verify if your Camaro is an SS by looking at the data plate on the top of the cowl just above the master cylinder. If on the top row it has a NOR and then a Z27 listed near the bottom then it is a legit SS. If it has a LOS on the top row there will be no Z27 listed on the data plate even if it is a real SS. The Suffix code you will find on the pad will look like this *VO5 06CNJ* This is actually
for a 1970 SS L48 engine I own...

If the cowl tag does not have the Z27 on the tag, it may still be an SS, as not all tags were coded early in the run.
Things to look for are the 12 bolt rear end, bigger sway bars, front disc brakes.

I know not all SS's had a Z27 stamped on the data plate. I have always thought that the Norwood (Nor)cars came stamped while the Van Nuys (Los) did not. My 71 SS is a Norwood car, which is unusual in California, where I live. Most of the SS cars I have seen are obviously Van Nuys car, which I have yet to see stamped with Z27. Does anyone have an opinion?
