I have a 68 Camaro with a 1979 350 motor.The casting number for the heads is 333882.I read somewhere that these heads were prone to cracking,where should I look for cracks?
Also,these heads were used on low performance
motors,what makes them different to higher performance heads and how can I modify them?

Those heads were produced between 1974-80 350's, they have 76cc chambers.

Bob,
The 882 heads actually seem to hold up pretty well. When they do crack, you usually cannot see it without maganafluxing them. As far as performance mods, the usual pocket porting, installing larger valves etc will do the trick, but in this day of real inexpensive aftermarket heads that are so much better right out the box, I would not spend much money on the Chevy heads unless you can do all the work yourself.

Bob.

I have found them to be cracked by the exhaust valve. Magnaflux is the only way to be sure.

The hot setup these days seems to be a set of the Vortec heads with an Edelbrock intake. Four hundred dollars for heads and about 160 for intake, plus odds and ends.

Tom has the right idea. Unless you're keeping the original heads for correctness, which it doesn't sound like you are doing, don't mess with modifying old GM heads. New aftermarket heads are soooo much better right out of the box, including the Vortec heads. By the time you machine and port a set of old GM heads to get the performance out of them, you are just about up to the price of some good after market heads. The $400-$500 you spend on some good heads hardly gets you a 3 angle valve job and a mild porting job on the old ones. Moral of the story: get new ones and set the originals in the corner. Contrary to what Edelbrock and Trick Flow would like you to believe, you don't absolutely need aluminum heads to get good performance. They're nice and light, allow you to up the compression a little more, but even the new aftermarket cast iron heads are light years ahead of the old GM lumps.
