I'm in the process of rebuilding & refinishing my power brake booster off my '69 SS 396. I always see these with a cad finish in all the shows and magazines. However I see no evidence of a cad finish on mine. I have it off the car and even the back of it is basically flat black. Did some of the boosters have a non-cad finish ? What is correct ? While I have it out of the car I'd like to make it right.

According to a highly regarded reference book the power brake booster for the SS396 should be "gold cadium dichromate".

Replacement Bendix boosters were black. Delco boosters were plated. Yours may have been rebuilt and painted. Most shops incorrectly refinsh boosters, making them far too glossy. OE Delco boosters had a dull finish.

If your booster is OE it should be stamped 9204 on one of the tabs. There is also a date code.
