I have a 327. How difficult is the main seal
seal to replace. Aside from pulling the
engine, would I need to press-fit the seal
or can it bu done by hand. I don't kow that
the seal is bad, but I am getting alot of
oil leakage back there.

Mine cut loose about a month ago also. It's leaking now.

Are you talking about doing it with motor out? If so, yea, you do it by hand, nothing to have press fitted.

With the motor still in the car? I won't do it, too much work to MAYBE fix it so it won't leak.

You are talking about the rear pan gasket right?

yep the rear pan gasket. If that's the one
that's two piece. See this:
I did a search and found this, it describes
what I'm talking about.

Rear engine seals (SBC) do not press in. I would suggest pulling the engine to do the job right. It really isn't hard to replace. You will also have to replace your oil pan gasket (I would suggest buying a one piece pan gasket while you're at it). Be sure to lube your new seal slightly (since your engine is not a dry rebuild this is not as important, but a little lube wouldn't hurt). You will also need a torque wrench so you can re-install the rear main cap to the proper specs.

The proper spec for the rear maincap is 75#

Also be sure to check the folowing for oil leaks that can be confused as the rear main.

oilpan, intake manifold end seal, oil pressure sending unit, rear cam plug, any one of 3 oil gallery plugs.

this work can be done in the car, you'll need to remove the trans and block the engine up high enough to snake the oilpan from above the crossmember.

Thanx alot guys! This really helps. I plan on
searching more for the exact leak. I also
plan on replacing the seal with the engine
out of the car, as I may be installing new
sub-mount bushings from Energy Sus. provided
I can get them in a timely manner. I happen
to work across the street from Energy but I
still can't buy parts there, oh well.
