I need to replace the dashboard metal on my 68 conv as well as he dash pad. I was going to wait until I do major body work - 1/4 panels, paint job etc, but do I have to wait? Is all that's required is to remove the cowl, windshield and dash pad. Then cut out the old one and weld or rivet in new one? Or do the fenders need to be removed?
Also with an ivy gold interior what color should the metal be painted?

I replaced the dash panel as well as floor pans in my '68. The windshield, fenders, cowl, were already removed but you may be able to leave fenders in place. Cold chisled the spot welds off and simply wire welded in new dash panel. Fairly simple operation, reseal metal edge with joint filling compound to insure against water leaks. Its a good time to do any "behind the dash" wiring while you have the dash panel off also.

As an alternative to a cold chisel for removing spot welds you might consider a spot weld cutter that is sold in most good tool stores. With a little practice you'll be able to use the tool to cut through the top layer of metal and pop it away from the lower layer leaving only a small area of the weld. Be sure to center punch the weld precisely and go slow with the cutter to avoid cutting through both layers. It is an acquired skill but it leaves a much neater and straighter surface than cutting with a chisel.

Its not hard at all. The dash top(the piece that always rusts out)is welded to the cowl and the front of the dash. Cut the spot welds with a spot weld driller not a cold chisel and there is 1 to 2 more welds down on the bottoms on each side. Once you cut the front away from the top, it will just about fall out and you will have no problem finding the other attaching points.

So I don't need to remove fenders? How about the hood? What all has to be removed to get the pad off? I suspect glove box and radio but what about instrument cluster. I'm not sure where all those nuts are. Thanks for the info

I dont think you will need to remove the fenders and the hood. You will need to remove the cowl panel,windshield and post mldgs, dash cluster and pad. Un do all the switches, if the glove box is good, take it out. Once you do all that find the spot welds that attach the top panel to the firewall and drill out the spot welds. On the sides there might be some bead welds under some seam sealer, a cut off wheel will do the trick. Find the welds where the top is joined to the front of the dash and do the same thing. There should be a small tab connecting the dash top to the windshield post, just cut the weld not the tab.You should be able to remove the dash top by now, and the front is held on by several spot welds down on the sides, cut them(there a bit harder to get to)and you should be dashless.

Thanks, I just might get brave enough to try this. What color does the dash get painted if the car is ash gold with ivy gold interior?
