Question

I'm in the process of putting a set of ProComp Ultralites in the dash of my 69 coupe. I'm getting the 5" tach and speedo along with 4 other gauges for Christmas . I'm cutting the original dash and am going to build an aluminum insert. I'm also interested in putting a console in my car. It currently has a T5 with just a boot on it. I've watched Ebay and priced the stock consoles at Ricks, etc. I'm now thinking that I'd like to build an aluminum console to go along with the dash. Anyone done anything like this or have any thoughts on it? All comments welcome - I'd love to see any pics of other custom dashes/consoles.

I also thought about doing something like that. Kind of like the hotchkis camaro in Hot Rod a couple of months ago. Keep us informed on how it comes out. Maybe you could make me a dash insert, too!!

I'm not knocking your idea, but there are tons of consoles out there from later cars.
Maybe one of them would fit and save you a lot of work.

I think an aluminum custom console could look very trick depending on how the rest of the car is done. I've always loved the trans-am era look. In fact, when the time comes for wheels, I've been considering the Vintage 48's by Vintage Wheel Works. They look like minilites and are 16x8 with 4 1/2" BS.

It's really not that hard to do if you have a sheet metal brake and the other proper tools but I agree with David. If you have a custom dash and want a custom console, there's lot's to choose from already made. Of course if you want a polished aluminum console to match your dash, it's a moot point.

Not down on your idea of a custom console, infact I'm all for it. But if you want original have you looked for a used one. angie has a spare that she may sell you if you are intersted.

Personally I think the original console is not very functional as an armrest, but that may not be as impartant to everyone as it is to me. They do look good though.
