I am just woundering on an 83 camaro with a 305 what the timing should be set at and what would cause it to diesel sometimes after shutting it off

Timing has nothing to do with the diesel condition, the carb is at fault, it is allowing fuel to enter the engine after it has been shut down, Check the idle speeds and for a flooding condition.

Idle too high, throttle plates open too far. Nothing to do with too rich. Reset the idle stop screw to give 650/700 rpm idle, then set the fuel screws, go back and forth with the stop screw then fuel screws, until you get the best idle, no after run-on, and easy hot starting.
