Okay, here goes........picked up a 350 from a guy who knows nothing about the motor, but it is stout. The motor was done about 1 year ago so I just put it in my car. First problem is the distributor, it has been worked over(springs, weights, etc) when I went to put it back in, the notch in the housing does not match with the tab on the cap.....when I do line it up the 3 wire hook up will not even reach the cap connection??
This is the distributor from the motor, I had it running in the donor car, never occured to me to make any notes as I have done many swaps before, but this one has me?
Plus.....after giving up on that one I threw another one in to get it runnung, at idle the timing light is telling me 55 degrees advance???

Hmmm, the cap should only go on in the correct position, and all the wires should line up, so something is very wierd with that distributor. As far as your timing readings, it's lieing to you. Either the #1 wire is not where it's supposed to be (it is absolutely possible, for example, to shove the distributor in with the rotor pointing anywhere, and start plugging wires into the cap such that when #1 is at tdc, the #1 wire is plugged into the cap where the rotor is "now.") It's also possible that the balancer and the timing tab don't match. You are not running at 50 degrees, the motor wouldn't even crank.
