sure is fun having the speedo work now, seems to be pretty close to being right and i didn't realize the old girl had that much in her. i also have a new noise that i'm guessing is due to the speedo. is there anyway to tell if it's the cable or the speedometer itself? seems to make a constant bump bump? sound (too bad it's not in harmony with the cam). i remember a buddy of mine had a 69 nova that he called tweety due to the speedo cable in it, this one is not that pronounced. it either levels off at 70 mph and above or all the other noises become louder. speedo has a slight bounce around 50, but not too bad. also is there any way to grease anything before entirely replacing the cable. if it's the speedo itself, i may just live with it before spending the cash to replace it.

Sounds like a sticky cable. There are cable greaser things that allow you to force some grease down the cable. I've never found one when I needed it so I just dribbled some light oil on the inner part (the moving cable) and let it run down inside the outer cover.

Thumbs up

disconnected the cable at the speedo last night. when i took it off, i got a
lot of either graphite grease or just plain funk on my fingers. shot some
WD-40 down it. took it for a midnight spin and it definitely helped if not
cured the problem. i'll give 'er a double shot today and see if that does
the trick. thanks!!!

Mike,

WD-40 is not a good lubricant for the long run. It is too thin and will evaporate. I would dribble some motor oil down the cable housing.

Cool

yea, i knew the wd40 was just a temporary fix. just wanted to see if that would cure it and it seems to have. which would you recommend for a more perm. fix - 3 in 1, motor oil or marvel mystry oil?

mike, use some white grease. you don't need a lot. some items such as wd-40, silicone, attract dirt and make it worse. go to your parts store and buy some white grease.
good luck,
