Do you have any information like the VIN or trim tag data? Is it an RS car?

In September of 98 it belonged to a guy named Jesse Gutierrez in the LA area. It was for sale at that time so it may have changed hands after that.

Don't have any contact info for him, sorry.

It had JL8 brakes in September of 98 along with U17 gauges, Z23 trim, front and rear spoilers, an N34 rose wood wheel (general feeling was the wheel was added later) but no documentation one way or the other about the rear axle. Its an 04A car, and there are several other LA JL8 cars built around that time. One built the same day but I don't have an axle date. There are two cars built the next day that have mid March dated rear axles(one has a 3/18 axle, and one has a 3/26 axle). It has a fairly low body number compared to the other 04A cars, something more in line with an mid March car, maybe GM accepted the order (In 69 body numbers equal order numbers) and had to get a JL8 axle from somewhere else.

You may luck out and find a build sheet above the tank, although I doubt the police department or whoever has it will let you drop the tank during the inspection.

Look at the tube size on the rear axles if it is a service axle it will be the same diameter all the way out to the backing plate. If it is an RPO JL8 axle it will be a larger diameter, and then neck down to a smaller diameter at the backing plate.

RPO JL8 front rotors are also of a larger diameter than "normal" front disc brakes, and will obviously have the 4 piston calipers. Service axle installations did not change the front rotors or calipers.

Hell, the axle alone is worth 5 grand even if it is a service axle.

Question

Mark C: Hoopers "The 1969 Camaro Reference Book" shows just the oppisite in the section detailing JL8's. RPO JL8 axle tubes taper down just before backing plate and service package the same diameter all the way to backing plate. Is this wrong? Thanks.

It's me, I got the axle descriptions backwards.

The car was at a show, with a for sale sign in it he wanted 28,000 for it.

I spoke with Jesse tonight. The car was stolen from him in 98 by a Young guy that paid for the car with Bad Cashier's checks. He also did the same thing on 2 Corvettes that same night. he stole 24 cars in all with Phoney Checks. Even Jessie's Bank thought they were real. They caught the guy about 8 months after he stole the Z. BEWARE of CASHIER'S CHECKS. The guy was from Seattle and is now in Prison.

I am the previous owner of the JL8 in question. I can answer any questions you want concerning the car. The rear axle is not a service axle. It is the original with the tapered tubes. The rosewood steering wheel was added by me in Dec 97. The transmission is not original. The car was completely restored from the ground up by me.
