I wish to try cleaning /flushing the aluminum radiator for a 1800cc Peugeot 405 wagon at home. Are there special cleaners/solvents or methods recommended?

Yes I learned the hard way. Regular radiator cleaner ate the radiator in my 63 Vette. It was an expensive lesson.

Aluminum radiators don't "clean" very successfully - once they build up corrosive deposits, they're pretty much history. That's why it's so important to maintain 50-50 antifreeze concentration (for the anti-corrosion additive) and flush/refill it every two years.
