me and my dad have put in a new stock goodwrench 350 into the 69 we are restoring, the problem is now everything in the engine compartment is set up, we installed the new fan shroud and the fan scrapes on it. the fan is an 18 1/4", we are wondering if we need to go down to a smaller fan, and whether doing so will affect the engine's performance. we tried muscling the shroud into mounting slightly different ways, but we could never quite get it to stop scraping though we came very close.

Yea steve, I would suggest a smaller diameter fan. 18" sounds like it would clear.
I don't think you would have any cooling problems with a smaller one, say 17" or so. I'm sure you could get one for near nothing at a junk yard.

Seeing as how the fan really only does its work at low (very low) RPM, then yeah, you needn't worry about decresing the fan diameter a bit to get 'er to fit.
