I just picked up a 69 Pace Car, Norwood built Z11. The cowl is painted white. I thought it would have been painted stripe color (orange) like you find on Z/28s. The car has been repainted only once from what I could tell. I tried to find evidence of orange on the cowl but could not. Any thoughts...

Only the areas visible under the vent grilles should be orange. Remainder of cowl area should be white.

Early production Z/28s with white stripes had very sloppy cowl paint. JM's 69 book has a photo of an original Z/28 with white paint half-way down the firewall. The painting process was later revised and the cowl area was masked off.

The cowl area was found to be Orange, the stripe color on my LA pace car. No white what so ever was found. During A previous overhaul, I painted the eng compartment up to the edge of the cowl area black. Then upon installing a new windshield & 2nd overhaul, I pulled off the cowl vent panel and found the entire area under the cowl panel painted Hugger orange.

William, I think I've seen the photo you describe with the sloppy overspray on the firewall. However, I know of two original paint 69 Z's near me (one VN other NOR). Both cars have a much neater paint job on the transition from the firewall to the cowl.

169indy, is your cowl painted orange all the way to the edge of the firewall?

I'd like to hear from some Norwood built Z11 owners. My car was built 04C.
Thanks all.

Here's what I have heard and have seen. LA cars had their cowls painted stripe color and Norwood cars had their cowls painted body color regardless of model. When I lived in Atlanta for awhile 99% of the cars where Norwoods and where painted as I described. My '69 Z is a late 68 build and although not very neatly, was masked where the firewall meets the cowl. One thing to remember is these plants where clear across the country from one another and to add to that the cars were built in shifts and each assembly operation was done by a different person on a different shift. Things like firewall markings, inspections stamps, cowl paint etc should not be a "go" or "no-go" dtermination on a car's correctness.

See you all in Rohnert Park in July!!

X77D80,
If you want pictures of a Norwood Z11 showing the cowl area let me know.
